A BIT ABOUT ME

I am currently a sophomore at the University of Kentucky majoring in Arts Administration and Dance. Coming from duPont Manual and the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville, Kentucky, I've  been extremely involved in the arts all of her life. At age 3 I started dancing for Dance By Trish where she danced for 11 years until it became Upstage Dance Centre, where I finished out my studio dance career for 4 more years. I was involved in Shrek: The Musical my junior year serving as dance captain, dancing Duloc, Rat, and Fiona's body double. I was also involved in Dance Team sophomore year and served as President of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Senior year. Past dance credits include “Road to Access: Full Blown” in Louder Than Words, “Full Blown” at Dixon Place in NYC, “Choking Hazard” at Triskelion Arts in Brooklyn, NY, and UK Dance Ensemble Spring 2018/Fall 2017.

I am currently pursuing an arts oriented career by double majoring in Arts Administration and Dance. By valuing service and the arts, it is my goal to serve my community through nonprofit arts organizations.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

As a long time dancer, I have seen several dance scenes; recreational, competition, high school dance team, and college level. When I was younger, I thought I totally understood dance. I knew what was going to make me successful in the competition scene and worked hard to achieve it.  I am thankful for the more than a decade that I was in competitions because it gave me the fundamental passion that I have built my career on today but the further removed I get from competition style, the more I realize that the less I know about dance, the more free I am to create fully. My current work is exploring the freedom of the box I danced in for so long.
I am not one to create a piece with tons of technique. I intend to make the audience feel like they are in the performance with me. I tend to create work that is dramatic. This gives me a space to use all this extra energy that I have built up in my head. There is something about dance that is so vulnerable for the performer, but also for the audience. I love to take the audience on a journey with me that makes them feel whatever story I am trying to tell, whether it be a physical replica of my anxiety, or a fun dance where I literally just run in place to upbeat music.
Storytelling is the best way to get people understand something. We, as humans, have been storytellers since the beginning of time, and I intend to keep the tradition going. As a dancer and choreographer, I have the opportunity to tell stories with the human body, which is far more descriptive than any word could be.
